A New Approach to Case Supervision

In speaking to Judges, clerks and court staff around the state we hear the same problems voiced over and over. Court clerks with more follow up on cases required than time permits, Judges having to deal with frequent case reviews, defendants failing to appear and “revolving doors” of defendants. And existing probation companies that focus more on collecting supervision fees than collecting fines and actually getting offenders through their probation successfully.

We’ve found some tools that have proven themselves at addressing these very concerns. And we would like to share them with you.

The JCS difference? We focus on the defendant
Our probation officers are measured on the percentage of cases successfully completed. That’s right. If the defendant successfully completes their probation, the PO is successful. It is as simple as that. This puts the court’s satisfaction as the probation officer’s primary goal. Neat, huh?

Our supervision entails all aspects of the defendant’s case (and needs). We comprehensively manage the case for success- not just to report on non-compliance.

And what does this all mean?
By placing successful supervision as the primary benchmark of success we ensure greater satisfaction from the courts we serve. When we successfully terminate cases, all other court and defendant needs fall neatly into place. Really.

So, what’s the bottom line?
We typically deliver an 80-85% successful termination rate through our comprehensive supervision system. With no supervision, only 35% or so actually successfully complete the terms of their sentence. With simple supervision- reporting of compliance only and not working with the defendant, you may only be seeing a 50% or so successful termination. Those extra cases successfully completed means more fines collected, fewer warrants, lighter dockets and less jail expense.

Who is Judicial Correction Services?

Known as JCS, we are one of the largest in the Southeast, but brand new to Mississippi. We currently serve approximately 150 courts in Alabama, Georgia and Florida. This includes courts as large as Fulton County, GA, Birmingham, AL and Bay County, FL as well as small municipal & state court systems. We serve rural, suburban and urban populations. JCS has supervised nearly 500,000 misdemeanor cases and we want you to benefit from our experience.

Here are six reasons to speak to JCS about your probation program, whether you are using a provider or simply curious about what probation can do for your court.

  • Financial management - Well defined formula for dividing amounts remitted between your courts’ fines and supervision fees. The lion’s share always goes to the court. Always.
  • Experience & training - Unfortunately there are no standards for private probation in most states. JCS has adopted a time proven ‘best practices’ for training, background checking and experience of its staff. No rookies will be tending to your court.
  • On-line case management - All JCS defendant and court interactions are available to you 24/7 through an on-line secure case management system. From a single payment to a year end comprehensive report it is all there.
  • Defendant programs - All JCS offices provide programs at no-charge to the defendant to promote success. Most often these are job skill/search classes. Un-employment and under employment is the most frequent reason for failing to complete supervision. This is one of the ways we reach an 85% successful termination rate.
  • Specialized terms for successful termination - We provide an incentive for the defendant to terminate early or otherwise comply with his probation.
  • Rapid follow up on all cases out of compliance - Typically a case out of compliance is dealt with within one day. Every case, every time. This alone boosts successful terminations tremendously.
